WASHINGTON — Rockville-based Genovation has set out to prove electric cars also can be performance cars, and in the process, just broke the record for electric-car speed.
Genovation, developing a limited-production, high-performance car for well-heeled consumers who are willing to pay for performance, recently broke the land-speed record for a street legal all-electric vehicle with its Genovation Extreme Electric car, or the GXE.
During tests at Space Florida’s Shuttle Landing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center, the modified Z06 Corvette reached 205.6 mph, shattering the previous record of 186.8 mph, also held by Genovation.
Genovation’s modified ‘Vette, with state-of-the-art battery management, inverters, batteries and electric motors, produces in excess of 600-horsepower. The car has a range of 130 miles during normal driving operation.
“We have managed to create a car that is both exhilarating for drivers and gentle on the environment,” said Genovation CEO Andrew Saul.
Genovation plans to start accepting preorders for its GXE vehicles in the third quarter of this year. Pricing won’t be announced until the third quarter, but a gas powered 2016 Corvette Z06 has a base price of about $79,000.
Genovation says it will produce just 99 of its GXE cars and expects to deliver them in the third quarter of 2017.
Also, Genovation is developing its own proprietary, built from the ground up, electric vehicle called the G2, though it is not in production yet.
