Founded in Georgetown, Bluemercury opens 100th store

WASHINGTON — Beauty products chain Bluemercury, which opened its first store in Georgetown 17 years ago, has opened store No. 100 in Savannah, Georgia.

Bluemercury has been growing rapidly since being acquired by Macy’s for $210 million in March 2015.

Macy’s plans to open a total of 42 new Bluemercury locations this year, including 24 free-standing stores and 18 Bluemercury boutiques inside Macy’s department stores.

It has opened 7 stand-alone stores and 5 in-store locations this year.

Bluemercury is a bright spot for Macy’s. The department store chain reported its fifth straight drop in sales for its latest quarter.

Macy’s net sales fell to $5.77 billion last quarter, from $6.23 billion a year earlier.

Marla Malcolm Beck and Barry Beck founded Bluemercury in 1999. Marla Beck remains chief executive officer, and the company is still headquartered in Washington.

Its newest store, in historic downtown Savannah, is 2,400 square feet, its first entry into a larger store size retail format.
