WASHINGTON — Arlington-based Opower Inc., a cloud-based software company that helps utility customers reduce their energy consumption, will relocate its headquarters and hundreds of employees to a new Arlington space.
Opower has about 360 employees in Arlington. As part of its move, it will create 70 new jobs.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe approved a $1 million grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist Arlington County with the project.
Opower will make the move to 2311 Wilson Blvd., in Courthouse, in 2018 to a new building to be constructed by Carr Properties over the next two years. Opower will occupy the top three floors of the building.
Keeping Opower in Arlington is a win for the county, which has a current office vacancy rate of more than 20 percent, though in 2015, it dipped for the first time in more than five years.
“It’s critical that Opower has access to a skilled workforce and is able to offer a compelling work environment,” Opower co-founder Alex Laskey said in a statement.
Opower’s new headquarters will be nice digs. Plans include a roof deck and an outdoor park for employees and their dogs, a gym and a staffed day care facility.
The new building will be about a quarter-mile from Opower’s current headquarters.
Opower had an estimated $148 million in 2015 revenue, according to Bloomberg data. It posted an $8 million third quarter loss. The company reports fourth quarter and full 2015 results later this month.
