Tommie McNeil

Weekend Anchor

Tommie McNeil is an anchor at WTOP who also doubles as a Virginia State Capitol Correspondent for Virginia Public Radio. He is a Baltimore native who now resides in Virginia.

Tommie started his professional career at Newsradio 550 WSVA as an anchor/reporter where he developed his passion for covering politics. He moved on to Richmond where he also worked as an anchor/reporter for 1140 WRVA until he was promoted to News Director for a cluster of sister stations in Charlottesville.

He also helped create the format for the morning show on 1260 WCHV and hosted it until just before the cluster was sold. Upon his return to Richmond he once again was bitten by the political bug covering Jim Webb’s defeat of former U.S. Senator George Allen, for FOX News. Shortly thereafter, he was asked to join the Richmond Capitol Bureau for Virginia Public Radio.

That afforded him opportunities to cover such notables as former President George W. Bush, Vice President Joe Biden, House Minority Leader Eric Cantor. He was even given a one-on-one with then-Senator Barack Obama, just two months before he won the White House in 2008.

Tommie’s love for politics is fueled by the need for people to know how they’re represented and keeping them civically engaged.

Wanting to be closer to both Washington politics and his family in Baltimore, Tommie jumped at the opportunity to work for WTOP, something his family and friends predicted would happen before he left Baltimore in 1999.
