A man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after the Metro Transit Police Department said he stabbed an officer in the face at the Navy Yard Metro station in D.C.
Erik Schleehauf, 43, of D.C. was charged Wednesday for assaulting a police officer and assault with a deadly weapon, the Office of U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Edward Martin said in a release on Wednesday.
According to a statement from Metro police, an officer stopped the man around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after watching him climb over the fare gates without paying at the Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro station near Nationals Park. When stopped, Schleehauf “immediately turned and assaulted the officer with a sharp metal object,” the statement said.
The weapon was described as a “sharpened, pointed tool” that Schleehauf had hidden on his person, officials said.
“The officer sustained lacerations and puncture wounds to the face,” a Metro spokesman wrote.
Other officers nearby detained Schleehauf, who was placed under arrest. The weapon used to assault the officer was recovered, according to Metro.
Schleehauf is being held without bond and will returning to court on Friday.
The officer was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
