The crowds, the commercials, the packed parking lots -- are you already dreading holiday shopping? Avoid the typical rush at the big box stores. This year, get in the spirit and get through your list at local holiday markets. Here are a few of the area\'s best.
Downtown Holiday Market The annual Downtown Holiday Market is one of the city's biggest holiday markets. In its 10th year, the market will open Friday, Nov. 28, and run through Tuesday, Dec. 23, on the F Street sidewalk in front of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
More than 150 artisans will display and sell their goods in the open-air market. Expect to find everything from jewelry to pottery, paintings and textiles. The Downtown Holiday Market will be open from noon to 8 p.m. every day.

Alexandria Holiday Market Alexandria's Holiday Market rivals some of the prettiest and most festive European Christmas markets.
Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Dec. 5 to Christmas Eve, the market transforms John Carlyle Square into a winter wonderland. Expect arts and crafts items, entertainment, traditional European food, hot wine and beer.

Grump Don't be a grump this holiday season. Instead, go to Grump , the annual alternative arts and crafts market at Artisphere in Arlington, Virginia.
Pick up art, soaps, clothing, accessories, handmade toys, jewelry, baked goods and more -- all from the D.C. area's most passionate, and non-conventional, artists.
This year's Grump will be held Sunday, Dec. 14, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Rock-n-Shop at the Black Cat One might not expect D.C.'s legendary music venue to hold a holiday market -- but the Black Cat likes to get into the spirit too. And if you have a music-lover on your list, you do not want to miss the Black Cat's Rock-n-Shop event.
On Wednesday, Dec. 17, the city's best music stores and vendors will come to the Black Cat for a "garage sale" of sorts. Expect records, clothing and more. The event starts at 8 p.m.

Northern Virginia Christmas Market Back for its 21st year, the annual Northern Virginia Christmas Market will be held Nov. 14 through 16 at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, Virginia.
More than 250 vendors from more than 20 states will be present to sell "Christmas collectibles," gift baskets, pottery, art, jewelry and more.

Del Ray Artisans Holiday Market Over three weekends in December, Del Ray Artisans will host its annual holiday market, featuring fine art and crafts.
The market will be held Dec. 5 through 7, Dec. 12 through 14 and Dec. 19 through 21.

Maryland Christmas Show Make no mistake, the Maryland Christmas Show is no small-scale event. The two-weekend-long market will occupy seven buildings, plus big top tents at the Frederick County Fairgrounds, Nov. 21, 22 and 23 and Nov. 28, 29 and 30.
