Virginia State Police investigating fatal police shooting

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police say they are investigating after a Fredericksburg police officer fatally shot a man.

State police say in a news release that the shooting occurred after a traffic stop and pursuit in the city Tuesday afternoon. A man was taken to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment of a serious injury. He later died.

According to state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller, the officer was taken to the hospital as a precaution to be checked for possible injury. She says the officer was not shot.

Police said additional details will be released later.

Statistics released by the state police show this is the 86th shooting by an officer investigated by the agency since 2010, and the fourth this year. Those numbers don’t represent all police shootings because some local departments conduct their own investigations.
