Va. man sues smoothie chain over hepatitis A outbreak

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (AP) — A Virginia man is suing a smoothie shop that he says sold him a beverage contaminated with hepatitis A.

The lawsuit against Tropical Smoothie Cafe was filed Tuesday in Prince William County Circuit Court and is one of several legal complaints about the smoothie chain.

Robert Daly alleges that he drank several smoothies from the franchise’s Woodbridge location before falling ill. He spent three days in the hospital and is still recovering.

Health officials have linked Tropical Smoothie Cafe to more than 100 hepatitis A cases in Virginia and more than two dozen in seven other states. Officials have traced the outbreak to strawberries imported from Egypt. The hepatitis A virus affects the liver.

An attorney for Tropical Smoothie Cafe did not immediately respond to messages on Tuesday.
