Dog sold online abandoned at Scottish rail station

WASHINGTON – Officials in Scotland are trying to figure out who abandoned a shar-pei and his suitcase full of belongings at a railroad station.

The dog, whose name is Kai, was found Jan. 2 tied to a railing at the station at Ayr, a seaside vacation town. A suitcase containing a pillow, toy, food and a bowl was left with the dog, according to the Scottish SPCA.

Through the dog’s microchip, animal welfare officers were able to locate Kai’s prior owner, who had sold the dog through an Internet site in 2013.

“This case highlights the potential consequences of selling an animal online as it often leads to the impulse buying of pets that people know very little about,” the animal welfare charity says in a statement.

Kai is believed to be between 2 and 3 years old, is a shar-pei mix and has a “nice nature.” He’ll stay with the SPCA until he is adopted.

Animal abandonment is an offense under Scottish law and anyone found guilty of abandoning an animal can be barred from owning animals, according to the agency.

The agency is investigating to try and find the person who left the dog at the station.
