NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A retired Navy officer has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of making threats against the president and Hillary Clinton.
David Gil Wilkinson of Suffolk entered the plea Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Norfolk.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/1CqXtlv) that the 44-year-old will be hospitalized until doctors determine that he will not pose a serious threat to anyone.
A hearing also was ordered to be held within 40 days to determine Wilkinson’s mental state.
Wilkinson was indicted in April after series of encounters with law enforcement earlier this year in which prosecutors say he threatened to kill Obama and Clinton.
The retired chief petty officer who worked with the Navy SEALs for 17 years has been in jail or a hospital since being arrested in March.
