Trailer hits arts center in Va., driver charged

CLAYPOOL HILL, Va. (AP) — A driver faces a defective equipment charge after a trailer carrying guardrails crashed into an arts center in Tazewell County.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller tells media outlets that no one was injured.

The accident occurred Friday morning near Claypool Hill.

Geller says the trailer broke away from a construction truck, ran off U.S. 19 and crashed into the front of the Appalachian Arts Center at Southwest Virginia Community College.

Geller identified the truck driver as 31-year-old Benny L. Terry of Pounding Mill.

Tazewell County building inspector Gary Jackson says some secondary walls were damaged. But the building’s main structural components diddn’t appear to be damaged.
