KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Dominic Woodson is transferring from Memphis to Tennessee, a source close to the situation said.

Woodson should be in class at Tennessee’s Knoxville campus on Thursday, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because Tennessee hasn’t announced the move.

The source said it remained up in the air whether Woodson would have to sit out the 2014-15 season. The 6-foot-10 forward could seek an NCAA waiver in an attempt to become eligible to play for his new school right away.

Memphis announced last week that Woodson was transferring. Woodson played 20 games and averaged 2.5 points and 1.9 rebounds for Memphis as a freshman last season. He didn’t travel to the NCAA tournament because of a violation of team rules.

Tennessee has been seeking to add a post player since losing second-round draft pick Jarnell Stokes and Jeronne Maymon from a team that reached a regional semifinal in March. The Vols have no players on their roster with a listed height above 6-foot-8 or weight above 220. Memphis’ 2013-14 roster listed Woodson as 300 pounds.

Woodson’s addition also could help Tennessee compensate for the unexpected loss of former Florida Gulf Coast forward Eric McKnight.

Tennessee announced in May that McKnight, who is 6-9, would play for the Vols in 2014-15. But the Southeastern Conference last month denied McKnight’s bid for a graduate transfer waiver. McKnight has since signed with Long Beach State.
