USAF: Virginia base to lose 742 positions

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Air Force says it will eliminate more positions at Joint Base Langley-Eustis than any other installation in the country as it undergoes a major reorganization and seeks to cut costs.

Nationwide, nearly 3,500 positions will be eliminated. The Air Force said Monday that 742 of those positions will come from Langley Air Force Base, which is the headquarters for Air Combat Command.

The Defense Department has told the Air Force to slash costs and staff by at least 20 percent. The Air Force said the cuts at major commands will help save $1.6 billion over the next five years.

It isn’t immediately clear how many of the positions at Langley Air Force Base will be civilians.
