US women edge Spain 77-75 to win U17 world title

PILSEN, Czech Republic (AP) — Lauren Cox had 20 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks to lead the U.S. women’s team to a 77-75 victory over Spain in the gold medal game of the under-17 world championship on Sunday.

Asia Durr added 17 points, and Arike Ogunbowale had 15 for the United States, which finished 7-0 in the tournament. The trio scored the final 10 points for the Americans.

Cox scored off a putback with 1:29 left to give the Americans a 73-71 lead. She then had a block and a defensive rebound at the other end, which set up a jumper by Durr with 44.4 seconds left. Durr sealed the win by making two free throws with 7.8 seconds remaining.

Angela Salvadores had 40 points to lead Spain (6-1) and earn MVP honors. She was 16 of 29 from the field.

It was the third straight gold medal for the United States.
