Eli Lilly CEO elected chairman of United Way board

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — The chairman and CEO of pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Co. has been elected chairman of United Way Worldwide’s board to help lead the nation’s largest charity.

The Alexandria-based United Way is announcing Wednesday that John Lechleiter from Eli Lilly will serve a two-year term as board chairman.

United Way President and CEO Brian Gallagher says Lechleiter will help strengthen the nonprofit network’s capacity to meet growing human needs around the world.

Lechleiter has been Eli Lilly’s CEO since 2008 and its chairman since 2009. He joined the Indianapolis-based company in 1979 as an organic chemist in research and development.

In a statement, Lechleiter says United Way improves lives and has an indispensable role in making changes in education, income and health for communities around the world.
