Cousins in, RG3 out on Sunday

WASHINGTON – Kirk Cousins will start for the Redskins Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, not Robert Griffin III, ESPN reports.

A high-ranking team official confirmed the switch with ESPN. The NFL Network also reported Cousins would be the starter.

On Monday, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan had said he was thinking about sitting RG3 for the rest of the season because of concern that the quarterback could be injured. He mentioned it the day after the Washington was routed by Kansas City 45-10.

Shanahan pointed out Griffin has been sacked 24 times in five games, and that two of the Redskins’ three remaining games will be played on artificial turf, including Sunday at Atlanta.

It’s a reversal of Shanahan’s previous stance that Griffin needed as many game snaps as possible to improve. Washington is 3-10.

ESPN reports owner Dan Snyder won’t intervene with the switch.
