Police ID man shot by off-duty officer in robbery attempt

WASHINGTON — Police have identified the man they say was shot by an off-duty police officer on Tuesday while attempting to rob her.

Marcus Young, 28, of Southeast, was listed in critical condition on Tuesday after being shot in the chest in the botched robbery attempt, says Gwendolyn Crump with the Metropolitan Police Department.

The officer was in plain clothes on personal business shortly before 7 a.m. when Young approached her, indicated he had a weapon and tried to rob her on the 1600 block of 18th Street in Southeast, Crump says.

The officer, who has not been identified, fired one shot from her department-issued firearm. She is on administrative leave with pay while internal affairs investigates the incident.

Crump did not say whether a weapon was recovered from the suspect.

Young is charged with assault with intent to rob.
