Contractors await guidance on returning to work from agencies

Companies are awaiting guidance from agencies telling them that workers can return after the shutdown closed government facilities to contractors, spurred stop-work orders, and forced thousands of furloughs.

Agencies were instructed to “reopen offices in a prompt and orderly manner” in a guidance from the Office of Management and Budget Wednesday night. While most federal employees will return to work Thursday, notices to contractors instructing them to restart programs will gradually filter in.

“The agreement will put the approximately 2,400 furloughed Lockheed Martin employees back to work soon,” Lockheed Martin Corp. said in a released statement. “We expect all U.S. government facilities to open, stop work orders to be lifted and for our operations to return to normal as soon as our customers are all back in place and have informed us that we may resume many critical programs that were halted during the shutdown.”
