Bethesda Area Community Service Week Events

Via Montgomery CountyAs part of Montgomery County’s annual Community Service Day, seven organizations are holding Bethesda area volunteer events the week of Oct. 20 to Oct. 27.

The projects once again include cleaning up and “putting away” parts of the baseball park at Shirley Povich Field, invasive weed removal at McCrillis Gardens and painting and yard work for a health care provider.

Glen Echo Park is also looking for volunteers to help with its Fall Frolic event. There’s also candy collection for troops overseas (pizza included) and cleaning work at a local cancer support group.

Put away Povich Field

At the end of the year, our beautiful ballpark need s to prepare for a long sleep during the winter. In order to make sure the field is ready for the summer of 2014, we need help to pull weeds, take down sponsorship banners, organize our shed and put things away. Lunch will be provided and we will provide SSL hours to those who participate.

Invasive Plant Removal at McCrillis Gardens

Help us remove ivy and other invasive plants from garden areas at McCrillis Gardens, our Brookside Gardens satellite location in Bethesda. All volunteers must be age 14 and up; (age 11-13 permitted if accompanied by a parent or guardian). All volunteers must apply online at www.parksvolunteers.org.

Fall Frolic Volunteers

Help Glen Echo Park Partnership host our annual Fall Frolic event on Saturday, Oct 26! This family friendly fall and Halloween themed event will take place from 1 – 4 pm and is free and open to the public. Activities include trick or treating around Glen Echo Park, a costume parade, arts and crafts activities and a “Pumpkin Promenade.” Volunteers are needed to help with set up, arts and crafts supervision, handing out treats in the “Pumpkin Promenade,” face painting, and clean up. Volunteer slots are from 11 am – 1 pm; 1 – 4 pm; and 4 – 5 pm.

Spruce Up at Hope Connections for Cancer Support

Hope Connections for Cancer Support offers free programs for cancer patients and their network of support givers. We recently moved to a new facility and need lots of help to Spruce It Up. We need to clean out the supply rooms, hang art work, shake out large Oriental rugs, wash large windows and window sills, clean and sanitize yoga mats, clean outside grounds (not yard work) and wipe down and repair picnic tables, etc, etc.

Painting and Yard Work for MobileMed

MobileMed needs help sprucing up our office.  The yard work will consist of picking up minimal litter, breaking up dead branches, cutting down/clipping dead bamboo surrounding our rear parking lot (this takes a little bit of muscle with the pruning shears, but is very do-able), raking, pulling weeds.

Painting will be done indoors, with an emphasis on our entry way, some office doors, and a couple of rooms. There won’t be any hard-to-reach painting with ladders.

Come and help bring a new face to our building!

Treats-4Troops Poster Making

MoverMoms has an annual post-Halloween candy collection in which we collect and then donate a ton of candy (and other snack foods) to US troops serving abroad. The candy is packed into Christmas Stockings by Boatsie’s Boxes after it is all collected from across the Washington DC region and delivered to Wheeling, West Virginia. The Community Service Day project is a preparation for the candy collection. All are welcome to come and make artistic and creative posters to encourage people to give candy. We usually make about 25-30 posters.

Community Service Day at Hillmead Neighborhood Park

Join volunteers across the county on this annual day dedicated to service. Help Weed Warrior Supervisor Steve Dryden rid Hillmead Neighborhood Park of unwelcome, non-native invasive species as part of Montgomery Parks Weed Warrior program. Event is from Noon to 3pm.
