Montgomery County’s Department of Transportation released a progress report on 10 years-worth of infrastructure construction projects in area neighborhoods.
Renew Montgomery, which includes curb installation or repair, sidewalk repair, road maintenance or renovation, ADA compliance, new streetlights, speed bumps, bus stop installations and more, seeks the input and in some cases the approval of homeowners through civic or neighborhood associations.
A new gutter project in the Wyngate/Ashburton/Alta Vista Terrace neighborhood was proposed only after the county petitioned the residents on street in 2009.
During the economic downturn in fiscal years 2010 and 2011, the program hit a speed bump of its own. Because of funding constraints, no new neighborhoods were added to the Renew Montgomery program until the fiscal year 2012 budget, when a neighborhood in Wheaton got in the budget.
The progress report details the type of work and community input involved in projects dating back to 2003. Since the program begain in 1996, the county says 72 neighborhoods have been upgraded with investments of more than $68 million.
