Report of D.C. backpack explosion fizzles out

WASHINGTON – Police and firefighters were called to an alley way around the Washington Center, at 3rd Street NE near K and L Streets, for reports of a backpack explosion.

Instead, DC Fire says a fireworks burst appears be the culprit.

Timothy Wilson, of DC Fire, says that there was a report of a person carrying a backpack who apparently dropped the backpack after the explosion and ran off. Wilson says that the person was likely carrying fireworks in the backpack.

Wilson adds that the blast was described as coming from an M-80, and that the backpack had other fireworks in it.

No one was hurt. Fireworks are illegal in the District.
