The good news is that State Highway Administration crews are almost done with improvements on Connecticut Avenue between the Beltway and Manor Road in Chevy Chase.
The bad news, for neighbors and commuters at least, is that the road resurfacing part of the final phase of the project will mean lane closures and loud construction noise until at least late August.
The SHA today announced details of the resurfacing, which will happen at non-rush hour periods. The SHA is removing the top layer of pavement of that stretch of Connecticut Avenue, patching it, resurfacing all lanes and re-striping the roadway with new lane markings.
An average of 67,000 vehicles travel along the section daily, according to SHA, which started the BRAC-related improvement project last spring. Weather permitting, the resurfacing should be done in late August.
Improvements there include a new southbound lane on Connecticut Avenue from the Beltway to Jones Bridge Road and the addition of a northbound Connecticut Avenue lane in the existing median to the Beltway. The goal is to improve capacity and traffic flow with the BRAC addition of Walter Reed to the Naval Medical Center campus.
During resurfacing, crews may close up to two lanes on Connecticut Avenue overnight, Sunday through Saturday, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. and one lane, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents and travelers are advised that equipment used for construction can be loud and disruptive. The SHA will maintain access for pedestrians and residents during the road work.
