Arlington Co. water mains slated for repairs

Iron pipes that carry drinking water to residents in Arlington County are getting a facelift.

The 60-year-old mains are being rehabilitated rather than replaced, county officials say, because it will cost less to clean the pipes out and reline them than to replace them – and cause less disruption than digging the pipes out of the ground too.

The County Board approved $1.8 million for the project; pipes will be chosen for repair based on how old they are and how often they’ve broken in the past.

In the end, officials say, residents won’t notice a change in the taste of the water, but they may notice that water pressure is improved.

Officials said residents will get advance notice when a water main project is coming to their neighborhood, and that no disruption in service is expected.
