WASHINGTON – Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia announced his support for same sex marriage with a post of Facebook Monday.
Warner, a Democrat, posted the note on the day before the Supreme Court will start hearing arguments on the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8, a voter referendum that banned gay marriages.
“I support marriage equality because it is the fair and right thing to do,” Warner wrote on his Facebook page. “Like many Virginians and Americans, my views on gay marriage have evolved, and this is the inevitable extension of my efforts to promote equality and opportunity for everyone.”
Warner is one of several politicians to announce his position as the high court is about to hear arguments on Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act.
In recent weeks, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., former Secretary of State Hillary Rodhman Clinton, and Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, have announced that they support marriage equality.
