Laurel police investigate rash of slashed tires

WASHINGTON – One week after someone slashed the tires of more than 60 vehicles in Herndon, Virginia, more cars were vandalized in Laurel, Maryland.

The cases are unrelated but sound familiar. Laurel City police say the tires on more than a dozen vehicles were found slashed in the Maryland suburb.

A spokesman for the city says a total of 17 vehicles were vandalized Friday night. Five were discovered at the Sportsman’s Pub, one at AMF Laurel lanes, and 11 at the Laurel Station Bar & Grill. Police discovered the cars at about 11:30 p.m.

All three sites lie along the U.S. Route 1 corridor in Laurel and investigators believe the slashings are connected.

Pete Piringer, City of Laurel police spokesman, says they have arrested and detained a person of interest.

“The adult male was found in the area,” Piringer says. “He was arrested and charged with an unrelated charge – an outstanding warrant. But the case is still active and open and we’re looking for any information that anyone has to share.”

Detectives from the Laurel Police Department are looking at surveillance videos from nearby businesses. If anyone has information to share with police, they can call the City of Laurel’s tip line at 301-498-7645.
