Alexandria woman dies in I-81 three-vehicle crash

WASHINGTON – An Alexandria woman has died after a three-car accident that forced parts of Interstate 81 to close Thursday morning, say Virginia State Police.

Sharon L. Tate, 47, was driving a Ford Escape southbound on I-81 when she came upon a traffic jam due to a lane closure for bridge construction at the 86 mile marker, police say. A tractor trailer, unable to break in time, swerved to the left to avoid plowing into stopped traffic and overturned onto its side in the median, poliec say..

As the tractor trailer swerved, accident investigators say, it hit Tate’s car and pushed it forward into the back of another tractor trailer.

Neither of the truck drivers were injured, say police. The driver of the tractor trailer that caused the accident Manrajbir Singh Kang, 45, of Ashburn, Va., is charged with reckless driving.

The accident forced police to close both southbound lanes of I-81 which were reopened by 9 a.m., police say.
