Hotels offer deals in August

WASHINGTON – Travel experts say you can still book an inexpensive getaway this summer.

Orbitz Senior Editor Jeanenne Tornatore tells WTOP that August can be the best time to catch a deal on a hotel. With kids going back to school at the end of the month, many hotels have excess inventory and are willing to offer deep discounts, she says.

Tornatore advises travelers to purchase packaged deals whenever possible.

Hotels “offer really deep discounts as part of a package where you just see the total price.”

That way, Tornatore says, hotels aren’t admitting how low the rate is. She calls it “rate integrity.”

Tornatore says the average hotel rate in August is $117 a night in New Orleans, $129 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., $101 in Orlando, Fla., $96 in Las Vegas and $118 in Denver.

Package deals Tornatore has discovered include airfare plus a three-night stay in a four-star hotel in Orlando for $359 and for $400 in New Orleans.

For travelers who can’t get away in August, Tornatore says good deals can still be found this fall in southern Florida, the Caribbean and mountain destinations before the ski season starts.
