Hundreds of couples renew vows decades later

WASHINGTON – Seeing as it is wedding season, it seems appropriate that hundreds of couples renewed their vows Sunday afternoon in D.C.

Decades after saying ‘I Do,” couples came to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for a mass renewal ceremony.

Among the couples, George and Margaret Morris who have been married 73 years ago. Margaret caught his attention right away when they met in school, he says.

“She came down the aisle and I said to myself ‘I’d like to know that girl.’ It took me a year to ask for a date. But I got it,” he says.

Another husband offered his advice on a long and happy marriage.

“You have to now how to shut up, when to shut up and how to say I love you,” he says.

That couple, married 60 years talked about it what it takes.

“I think you put all your trust in god and you make a commitment to stay,” she says.
