Rare free parking comes to an end in NW

WASHINGTON – Parking is hard to come by in D.C., especially free parking. And, on Monday, hundreds living and working near the National Cathedral will lose the privilege.

The recently shuttered Giant grocery store’s parking lot at Newark Street and Idaho Avenue in Northwest is closing in preparation for two years of construction on a new Giant store, housing and shops.

Some who’ve grown accustomed to using the lot now say they’ll be forced to park in residential areas.

The restaurant Cactus Cantina suggests its customers pay to park at the Cathedral, which costs $7 to $9 on nights and weekends. On weekdays, the same parking lot costs $16 for cars parked for more than an hour and $7 if drivers enter after 4 p.m.

The lot closes at 11 p.m.
