WASHINGTON – The Island Cafe, a popular restaurant and nightlife spot in D.C.’s Petworth neighborhood was closed by police Saturday morning following a stabbing.
Police say a fight broke out between two men around 2 a.m. at the restaurant on Upshur Street NW. One man was stabbed in the stomach.
Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier ordered the Island Cafe closed for up to 96 hours or until 6 p.m. Wednesday, pending review from the city’s liquor board.
“As many times as I’ve been here, I’ve never seen anything like that,” says one regular of the restaurant.
The restaurant was closed in March 2008 after a shooting at the establishment.
