How to access blacked-out Wikipedia site

WASHINGTON – Folks who can’t live without Wikipedia can access it, even thought it’s blacked out to protest new proposed anti-piracy legislation.

Use Firefox and disable Firefox, reports IBN Live.

Here’s what you do. Go to Tools > Options > Content. Uncheck the JavaScript option to disable JavaScript.

WTOP has tried it and it worked in Firefox.

Chrome users should go to Setting > Options > Under the hood > Content Settings under Privacy > Select button that says, “Do not allow any site to run JavaScript.”

Other workarounds include the following:

  • Reading cached versions on Google. Put your cursor over the Google link to the page and click on the arrow to the right.
  • Download a copy of Wikipedia using Kwix.
  • Use a mobile app. While the main site is blacked out, users can install any Android Wikipedia app and access the content.

Users will have to undo these changes to access features on other sites, like videos in YouTube.
