Bus driver disciplined after sleeping girl left on board

A bus driver who finished her route and drove home with a sleeping 5-year-old on board last week is facing disciplinary consequences, according to Frederick County Public Schools spokeswoman Marita Loose.

The driver was not on her route Monday, Loose said.

Loose could not say when the driver will return because the investigation is ongoing, but the driver has not been fired, she said.

Since she was left on the bus Jan. 3, Kemiyah Myers has not ridden school system transportation from the Children’s World Early Learning Center in Walkersville to Glade Elementary School, according to her mother, Kiki Myers.

Instead, the prekindergarten pupil is riding a bus provided by the day care center, Myers said.

Kemiyah is still riding school system transportation from Glade after school, she said.

Myers said her daughter will continue to ride the day care center bus until she feels comfortable riding an FCPS bus to Glade again.

“It’s just a matter of making her feel comfortable,” Myers said. “I don’t want to force her.”

Myers believed taking the driver off her route temporarily is a fair punishment.

“I don’t want anyone to lose their job behind this situation,” she said. “These types of things do happen; they’re mistakes.”
