WASHINGTON — The Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College is back to normal Friday morning.

The Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College was on lockdown for almost six hours on Thursday because of a distraught man near the campus.

Fairfax County Police say the man locked himself in an apartment on the eighth floor, South Tower, at the Skyline Plaza Condo Building on South George Mason Avenue, near Leesburg Pike/King Street.

Given the proximity of the apartment to the campus on Dawes Avenue, the campus was put on lockdown as a precaution.

Plice say the man threw a piece of furniture from the apartment — facing the campus — during the standoff.

Police grabbed the man when he tried to climb out through his back balcony around 10 p.m. Officers on a nearby floor grabbed him and took him into custody.

Detectives say he was alone the entire time, although he claimed to have a gun.

No one was hurt.
