WASHINGTON — Rockets get launched from Wallops Island in Virginia all the time. Now, Virginia delegate Terry Kilgore is proposing tax deductions for using the facility to send ashes to space.
Several companies already launch cremated remains from other ports in Florida and New Mexico. The going rate is between $1,000 and $12,000 depending how far you want to go and whether you want the remains returned to earth.
The Virginia income tax deduction, if approved, would be good for up to $8,000 total between 2013 and 2021.
Kilgore’s bill has no co-sponsors. It will be up for debate early next year.
Adventurers interested in taking a post-mortem space flight before that can book through Celestis. Prices start at about $1,000.
