WASHINGTON — BWI Marshall Airport, which recently completed a new connector facility for concourses D and E, will move forward with an expansion project to keep up with the growth of its international flights.
The Maryland Board of Public Works on Wednesday unanimously approved a $60 million construction contract with Baltimore-based Whiting Turner to build a three-level, 70,000-square-foot addition to the airport’s international terminal.
The construction will add six new gates to concourse E, nearly doubling the number of gates at the terminal, which is used exclusively for international departures and arrivals.
“This next phase of terminal development will ensure BWI Marshall has the capacity to support growing international service,” said Ricky Smith, chief executive officer for the airport.
A preliminary construction schedule expects the new gates to be ready by summer 2018.
BWI Marshall had 1.2 million international passengers in 2016, its second consecutive record for international passengers. It had a total of 25.1 million domestic and international passengers, also a record.
