WASHINGTON — Amtrak is reporting a record 31.3 million passengers for its most recent fiscal year — 400,000 more than the previous fiscal year.
It was the sixth consecutive year that more than 30 million passengers traveled on Amtrak.
Its Northeast Corridor, which runs from D.C. to Boston, accounts for the largest share of its passengers. Acela Express trains carried 3.5 million passengers in fiscal year 2016, up 0.5 percent. Northeast regional trains carried 8.4 million passengers, up 2.4 percent.
Amtrak also had record ticket revenue of $2.14 billion in the 2016 year, $12 million more than the previous fiscal year.
Amtrak reported total fiscal 2016 revenue of $3.2 million, as well as an operating loss of $227 million, down from a $305 million loss in the previous fiscal year.
“We are off to another strong start for the new fiscal year and will provide a great travel experience for customers who choose Amtrak in the upcoming holiday season,” said Anthony Coscia, Amtrak’s board chair.
Amtrak is preparing for next week, its busiest of the year.
Last year, Amtrak carried more than 751,000 passengers during the Thanksgiving travel period.
On the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak Acela Express and Northeast Regional services will operate an extended schedule, with additional frequencies and added capacity between D.C. and Boston.
The busiest travel days will be Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after the holiday, the carrier said, with more availability typically on morning trains.
