Md. students protest classmate’s photo with racial slur

ESSEX, Md. (AP) — Students at an Essex school are protesting a photo of a classmate posing with a racial slur written in the dirt of a baseball diamond with the label “Baseball is a white mans (sic) sport.”

The photo circulated on Twitter on Wednesday, naming two Eastern Technical High School students. It’s not clear if the label references a quote from Baltimore Orioles player Adam Jones, who was discussing the lack of baseball players kneeling during the national anthem.

Baltimore County Public Schools spokesman Mychael Dickerson said Thursday that the students who posted the image attend the school, but it’s not known if it was taken there. He says two students were disciplined.

Dickerson says about 200 students protested peacefully and calls it an opportunity for “honest conversations about race.”
