Area colleges score high in Peace Corps’ volunteerism rankings

WASHINGTON — American University has a new distinction to be proud of.

The Peace Corps on Wednesday announced its annual list of colleges that produced the most Peace Corps volunteers nationwide, and American took the No. 2 spot among medium-sized schools (5,000-15,000 undergraduates), with 41 alumni currently in service.

The area didn’t fare too badly overall — George Washington and the University of Virginia tied for third behind American in the medium category with 36 each.

Virginia Tech (43) tied for 11th in the large-school category (more than 15,000 undergraduates), with the University of Maryland-College Park (38) tied for 18th.

In the medium category, Georgertown tied for 10th with 23.

Washington state proved the juggernaut, however, sweeping the categories with the University of Washington (72) taking the top spot among large schools; Western Washington University (47) taking the medium category and Gonzaga University (20) the small. The University of California-Berkeley has the top spot in the all-time count, with 3,598 since 1961.

The Peace Corps says that 2014 applications were at their highest level in 22 years.
