Rockville’s Colorlab launches short film fest

ROCKVILLE, Md. — It’s best known for film preservation, film-to-video telecine transfers, and its work in the experimental filmmaking community.

Now, Rockville-based Colorlab is launching a short film fest for all comers.

The grand prize is a 16mm film-out intermediate, soundtrack and print of your film, an estimated value of up to $3,200.

“Our top prize is longevity,” Colorlab Executive Director Ben McMurry says. “We’re giving away polyester intermediates and a print because there is no better way to preserve a film.  The winner is going to have something that, with little to no oversight, will still be accessible in one hundred years.  That’s what we’re trying to promote here.”

Films must be 15 minutes or less and must have been made after Jan. 1, 2013.

All genres and formats are welcome.

Voting will take place by the Colorlab staff.

“The endless game of catch-up that we play with digital technology means migrating our movies to a new format every few years,” McMurry says. “If we don’t keep up, we lose it forever.  With film we will never have to keep up—to see it again, all we need is light.”
