WASHINGTON – The Newseum is opening an exhibit that features literal pages of history from the hours after President Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed.
On display will be seven editions of the New York Herald that broke the news of the assassination and aftermath.
“These are all originals that were printed in 1865,” says Carrie Christoffersen, curator and director of collections at the Newseum. “It traces the 18 hours immediately following the shooting of President Lincoln.”
Among other things, the newspaper editions report on the shooting, the president’s death, the hunt for the assassin and the swearing in of a new president.
“We are so thrilled to be able to put this on display,” says Patty Rhule, the Newseum’s senior manager of exhibit development.
“President Lincoln is Dead: The New York Harold Reports the Assassination” exhibit opens Friday, and it will run through early next year.
