4 Md. jail guards indicted for smuggling contraband

WASHINGTON — Four Anne Arundel County jail guards were arrested Tuesday morning on charges that they smuggled contraband to prisoners held at the county’s Jennifer Road Detention Center.

A grand jury indicted the four guards on a total of 61 counts including misconduct in office, possession of contraband, contraband delivery, bribery and conspiracy, according to Anne Arundel County police.

Investigators say the four smuggled in tobacco products, fast food, lighters and matches, plus a cellphone and accessories.

The county’s Department of Detention Facilities contacted police in January to report the suspected smuggling by its guards.

Those arrested are Catherine M. Windsor, 26 of Lothian, and James W. Newsome Jr., 25 of Mechanicsville, who each have worked for the detention facilities department for two years. Veteran staffers Kenyatta O. Trotter, 41 of Gwynn Oak, and Grayling S. Jackson, 59 of Severn, who have both spent 17 years with the department, were also charged.

The county’s Jennifer Road Detention Center generally holds inmates awaiting trial. The county also operates a second facility, which houses inmates who are serving sentences of 18 months or less.
