Alexandria’s historic Old Town Theater could reopen soon

WASHINGTON — Alexandria, Virginia’s landmark Old Town Theater has been sitting idle ever since its doors closed in July 2014.

The 100-year-old venue was slated to become a retail and restaurant space, but now the theater could once again provide local entertainment

Planning papers recently filed with the City of Alexandria list Jeffery L. Yates as the owner and operator.

Patch reported that Yates pulled out of a deal to buy the Old Town Theater earlier this year, but it now appears that he changed his mind.

The venue, which was restored in 2012, was reportedly on the market for $3.5 million a year ago. It’s not known how much it ultimately sold for.

The application says the site will be used as an “amusement enterprise” that will hold music performances, lectures and theatrical shows, as well as community outreach and educational events.

It also says that the venue may have a theme related to Yates’ name and association with automotive related businesses.

Alexandria City Council could take up the permit application as soon as November.
