William and Mary announces $27 million Zable Stadium renovation plan
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) — The College of William and Mary is embarking on a $27 million renovation of 79-year-old Zable Stadium.
Officials said Tuesday that the Williamsburg school already has raised $22 million toward the project, which will be the first major structural alterations to the stadium since it opened in 1935. The renovation is scheduled to begin early next year and be completed by the start of the 2016 season.
“We’re very excited about it,” William & Mary football coach Jimmye Laycock said Tuesday. “We feel like it’s certainly going to certainly help everyone involved with being at the games and all that. It’s going to look very nice.”
The improvements will include a new upper deck, suites and press box on the west side of the 12,259-seat stadium. It also will feature improvements to safety and accessibility features, including wider aisles, the renovation of existing rest rooms and the addition of new ones, improved lighting, additional hand rails, an upgraded sound system, additional concession and retail locations, and a new entrance and ticketing location.
The work will also feature Flemish bond brickwork, slate roofs and gables creating aesthetic continuity with the west and north ends of campus.
Zable Stadium is home to William and Mary’s football and track and field teams.
