Isinbayeva gives birth, as she promised at worlds

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia’s champion pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva has had a baby — just as she boldly predicted 10 ½ months ago after winning gold at last year’s world championships.

The Russian Athletics Federation announced Sunday that Isinbayeva had given birth to a baby girl the night before and that both mother and child were doing well.

Shortly after her winning leap at the world championships in Moscow in August, Isinbayeva said her next goal was to become a mother and promised that she would soon be pregnant.

Evidence that she was as good as her word came during the opening ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics in February, when she was one of the final torch bearers.

Isinbayeva, now 32, is widely considered the best female pole vaulter of all time.
