Town of Chevy Chase Lobbies Against School Portable – With concerns about an adjacent open space, the Town of Chevy Chase recently lobbied against two portables planned for overcrowded Chevy Chase Elementary School. MCPS agreed to install just one portable and screen it off from the neighborhood by planting trees. The school system will also convert the school’s computer lab to a classroom and install wireless internet throughout the building to compensate. [The Gazette] [Town of Chevy Chase]

Kuker-Kihl Drops Out Of District 16 Race – Karen Kuker-Kihl, the former school teacher running for one of three District 16 House of Delegates spots, said she must drop out of the race because of ongoing health issues. Kuker-Kihl’s name will still be on the ballot on June 24 and when early voting starts Thursday. She said she wanted her supporters to know they should vote for other candidates. [Karen Kuker-Kihl]

County Defines Sustainability – Borrowing from the United Nations, Montgomery County on Tuesday came up with its official definition of sustainability. The County Council also passed a bill that will mean a new Office of Sustainability in two departments to make sure the local government meets its energy reduction goals. [Washington Post]

Road Resurfacing Projects – Two neighborhood road resurfacing projects are set to start next week. The Stratton Woods subdivision (west of Fernwood Drive, between Democracy Boulevard and the Beltway) will have four weeks of work from the Montgomery County Department of Transportation. Both that project and the one in the Wyngate neighborhood are scheduled to start Monday, June 16. The Wyngate work is expected to take three months to complete.
