Facing a May 10 deadline to remove the giant blue skateboard sign above his business, Bethesda Scooters and Boards co-owner Kaare Wieneke relented on Sunday, taking down the 75-pound piece of styrofoam.

Wieneke and partner Tyson Plumbtree installed the giant skateboard above their store at 4825 Fairmont Ave. without the necessary sign permit, according to Montgomery County. The county said it was made aware of the skateboard when someone complained about it.

The Department of Permitting Services threatened fines of $500 per day if the 8-foot-long skateboard wasn’t removed by Saturday.

On Sunday afternoon, Wieneke obliged. The skateboard was installed in March and had become a neighborhood favorite, Wieneke said.

Wieneke said he didn’t think he needed a sign permit for the skateboard, which doesn’t have the store’s name on it. The county disagreed and the blue skateboard is no more.
