Montgomery County high schools evacuated

WASHINGTON — Two Montgomery County high schools were evacuated Tuesday morning after someone called in an anonymous bomb and shooting threat.

Northwest High School in Germantown and Northwood High School in Silver Spring were both evacuated around 10 a.m. Montgomery County Police responded to the schools.

Northwest High School students were allowed back in the school’s gym and auditorium at about 11:15 a.m., Montgomery County Public Schools tweeted. Northwood High School students were cleared to re-enter the school at about 11:30 a.m.

There have not been any reports of injuries.

MCPS Spokesman Dana Tofig says that because of the rain, school administrators tried to get students covered and in nearby locations.

Parents were notified of the evacuations by phone and email.

Below is the note emailed to Northwood High School parents about the evacuations:

Northwood High School is in the process of evacuating due to a threat made against the school that was phoned into police. We took this action in an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our students and staff while the police investigate this threat. Once it the police assure us it is safe for us to re- enter the building, we will do so. Because of the rainy weather, we are taking the 9th and 10th graders to Forest Knolls elementary school and the 11th and 12 graders to Rice Memorial Church. The principal will contact you later with more information as it becomes available. Please know all student are safe and secure.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story said one school was on lockdown. It was evacuated. We regret the error.
