GWU grad student dies of meningitis

WASHINGTON – A George Washington University graduate student has died after contracting meningococcal meningitis.

The university announced Thursday the student had contracted the disease.

The female student worked in D.C. and lived in Fairfax, Va. She is said to have come in contact with around 35 other people.

The university has asked all who have come in contact with the student to be screened. The university says no other students have been diagnosed with meningococcal systems.

Meningococcal meningitis is rare but potentially fatal. It can be spread through close contact, such as kissing, sneezing, coughing or even being in contact with an infected person for more than eight hours.

Meningococcal meningitis can be treated with antibiotics if caught in its early stages.
