Colgate grinds out 27-12 win over Cornell

HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP) — Jake Melville threw for 71 yards and ran for 64 more, including a 53-yarder for a score in the second quarter, to lead Colgate to a 27-12 win over Cornell on Saturday.

Both of Colgate’s remaining touchdowns came on the ground, a 1-yard run by John Wilkins and a 3-yarder by James Travellin. Jonah Bowman kicked two field goals for the Raiders, both of which came in the second quarter.

Wilkins run gave Colgate (1-2) a 7-0 lead in the first and Bowman’s pair field goals gave them a 13-3 lead at halftime. Lucas Shapiro scored the lone Cornell touchdown on a 17-yard pass from James Few, before Melville ripped off his 53-yard run to push the Raiders lead back to double digits.

Few passed for 54 yards and one touchdown for the Big Red, and John Wells kicked two field goals.

The game was the season opener for Cornell.
