Furman stifles Gardner-Webb in season opener 13-3

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Reese Hannon tossed a 6-yard pass for the game’s only touchdown in a 13-3 season-opening win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday night before leaving the game late in the third quarter with an injury.

Hannon completed 21 of 30 passes for 221 yards before the injury.

The touchdown throw came after Jordan Snellings caught the short pass and sidestepped a defender before stepping into the end zone for a 10-3 lead with 1:08 left in the first half.

Jon Croft Hollingsworth added field goals of 28 and 47 yards. Besides Hannon, the Paladins also played without the Southern Conference’s top returning rusher, Hank McCloud, who sat with a hamstring injury.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs, who played most of the game without big-play receiver Kenny Cook, who was injured, had 169 yards offense in the first half but finished with just 194.

Paul Schumacher’s 19-yard field goal provided the Bulldogs’ only points.
